About this wine
Sarmassa is the cru that Marchesi di Barolo have worked longest and know best, on the southeastern slope above the village, and it is historically prized for giving both power and elegance rather than having to choose between them.
Decant at least two hours before pouring.
Tasting notes
Bright garnet red. Complex and refined on the nose, with rose, liquorice, vanilla and subtle hints of tobacco and pine resin. Full bodied, elegant and structured on the palate, with firm yet polished tannins. The finish is long, harmonious and spiced, showing excellent balance and depth. The Sant'Agata marl of the site, mixed with clay, silt and abundant stone, drains sharply and gives the Nebbiolo both concentration and finesse.
Goes with
Tajarin with white truffle, roast game, braised beef, mushroom risotto, and mature Parmigiano-Reggiano.

The producer
Marchesi di Barolo is the historic house of the town of Barolo itself, descended from the estate of the Falletti family. Marchesa Giulia Falletti is widely credited with the creation of modern dry Barolo in the mid 19th century, and the cellars still stand opposite the family castle in the centre of the village.
