About this wine
Mouton is the only estate ever promoted within the 1855 classification. Baron Philippe de Rothschild campaigned for decades and won in 1973, at which point the motto on the label changed from "first I cannot be, second I do not deign to be, Mouton I am" to "first I am, second I was, Mouton does not change."

Tasting notes
Deep purple-black. Refined notes of blackcurrant, blackberry, raspberry and rose oil, layered with cedar, liquorice, truffle and mineral nuances. Medium to full bodied, with firm but elegant tannins, tightly woven fruit and a long, mineral-driven finish combining power and finesse. Pauillac's gravel soils and maritime climate are what allow Cabernet Sauvignon to ripen fully here while keeping the structure that lets these wines live for fifty years.
Goes with
Grilled or roasted red meats, especially ribeye or lamb, hearty stews, game, mushroom risotto, and hard cheeses such as Comté or aged cheddar.

The producer
Château Mouton Rothschild has been owned by the Rothschild family since 1853. It sits in Pauillac in the Médoc, on the gravel soils that suit Cabernet Sauvignon better than anywhere else in the world. Baron Philippe de Rothschild took control in 1922 and transformed the estate, introducing château bottling and the annual artist label, before securing its promotion to first growth in 1973.
