Smith Haut Lafitte is one of the great modern success stories of Bordeaux, bought derelict by Daniel and Florence Cathiard in 1990 and rebuilt into a classed growth that now makes its own barrels on site.
Tasting Notes
A profound ruby-red cloak. An opulent bouquet weaving together dark cherry, violets and a hint of wood smoke. The palate has a rich texture and ripe tannins, with blackberry, tobacco and a touch of spice, culminating in a majestic and enduring finish. Pessac-Léognan gives its reds a smoky, gravelly character quite distinct from the Médoc, and this estate is among the most reliable expressions of it.

About the Producer
Château Smith Haut Lafitte lies in Pessac-Léognan, south of the city of Bordeaux. Daniel and Florence Cathiard bought the run-down property in 1990 and rebuilt it, farming organically, building an on-site cooperage and adding the Les Sources de Caudalie hotel and the vinothérapie spa that grew into the Caudalie skincare business. It is a Cru Classé de Graves for both its red and its white.
