Château Margaux | Grand Vin - Premier Grand Cru Classé
Description

Château Margaux is the most perfumed of the five first growths, the one that trades power for grace. Cabernet Sauvignon dominant, grown on deep gravel banks in the commune it gave its name to, it is often described as the most graceful wine in Bordeaux.

Tasting Notes
A tapestry of floral aromas, ripe red fruit and a hint of truffle, leading to a silky, ethereal palate that defines Margaux's grace. Violets are the signature note here, and they appear in almost every great vintage of this wine. Where Latour and Mouton build on power and structure, Margaux persuades. Classified a Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1855, one of only four châteaux in the original list.

Quick Facts

  • Grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon dominant, with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot
  • Origin: France, Bordeaux, Margaux
  • Classification: Premier Grand Cru Classé, 1855
  • Style: Dry red, perfumed, silky, exceptionally long lived
  • Terroir: Deep gravel banks, which drain sharply and force the vine roots down

Food Pairing
Roast lamb, beef fillet, game birds, truffle dishes, and aged hard cheeses. Nothing that competes with it.

Serving
Serve at 17 to 18°C. Decant at least two hours before pouring. Young vintages need decades, mature ones need care.

About the Producer
Château Margaux is one of the five first growths of Bordeaux, classified Premier Grand Cru Classé in the Bordeaux Classification of 1855. The estate sits in the commune of Margaux in the Médoc, on deep gravel soils, and its neoclassical château is among the most recognisable buildings in the wine world. Alongside the Grand Vin it produces a second wine, Pavillon Rouge, and the rare Pavillon Blanc, the only white wine made at a first growth.
