Description

A wild, oxidative orange wine from the hills of Emilia-Romagna, made by one of Italy's most singular natural wine minds with a blend of ancient indigenous varieties and a skin maceration that produces a wine unlike anything else in the country.

Tasting Notes

Amber gold with a natural haze. The nose is complex and evolved with aromas of dried apricot, orange peel, quince, honey, wild herbs, and a distinctive oxidative, nutty depth. On the palate it is full and textural, with a savoury, tannic grip from extended skin contact and a long, persistent, slightly bitter finish. A wine that demands and rewards attention.

Quick Facts

  • Grapes: Field blend of indigenous white and pink varieties including Malvasia di Candia, Ortrugo, and others
  • Origin: Italy, Emilia-Romagna (Piacenza hills)
  • Style: Orange wine, extended skin maceration, zero added sulphur, unfiltered
  • Winemaking: Whole cluster, extended skin contact, wild fermentation, aged in large old wood, no fining or filtration
  • Suitable for vegetarians and vegans

Food Pairing

Outstanding with aged hard cheeses, charcuterie, offal, roast pork, and dishes with some oxidative richness. Also a superb match for complex Asian flavours.

Serving

Serve at 12-14°C, slightly below room temperature. Open 30 minutes before serving. A genuinely unique wine that evolves dramatically over an hour in the glass.

About the Producer

Denavolo is the project of Giulio Armani, winemaker at the renowned La Stoppa estate in Emilia-Romagna, who created this label as a personal exploration of the region's ancient indigenous grape varieties. Working from his own small vineyard in the Trebbia valley, Giulio produces wines of extreme originality and uncompromising natural philosophy, with extended skin macerations and no additions of any kind. Denavolo has become one of the most sought-after names in the Italian natural wine world.
