The Balvenie | DoubleWood - 12 Years

The whisky that made cask finishing a standard practice. In 1993 Malt Master David C. Stewart took Balvenie matured in traditional whisky oak and transferred it into Oloroso sherry casks for a second maturation, then married the two in large tuns before bottling. The traditional casks give the vanilla and honey backbone, the sherry wood adds depth and dried fruit, and the marrying period lets them settle together.

Tasting Notes

Gristy, supple nuttiness intertwined with spice, honeyed sultanas and grapes, hugely inviting on the nose. Sweet on the palate with good body, the bourbon characters developing into gentle spice and a little vanilla, with a hint of balancing peat sitting quietly underneath. Dried fruit combines with nuts, nutmeg and cinnamon before folding back into the bourbon notes, all of it well integrated. Long and warming to finish.
