Description

A richly spiced barrel-aged Syrah from the Middle Atlas foothills of Morocco, where altitude and mountain winds produce a red wine of surprising finesse and European-style refinement, perfect for lovers of Chateauneuf-du-Pape.

Tasting Notes

Deep garnet in the glass. The nose is immediately appealing with aromas of ripe dark plum, blackberry, black pepper, roasted red pepper, vanilla, and a warm violet floral note. On the palate it is full bodied with ripe, plush fruit, fine smooth tannins, and a long, elegant finish. The combination of Moroccan sunshine and high altitude freshness gives this Syrah a distinctive character.

About the Producer

Domaine de la Zouina was established in the early 2000s near Meknes when French vignerons Gerard Gribelin and Philippe Gervoson discovered the exceptional potential of the region's limestone and clay soils on a golf trip. At 800 metres above sea level in the Middle Atlas foothills, the vineyards benefit from cool nights and mountain winds that balance the Moroccan heat. The estate now produces wines under the Volubilia and Epicuria labels and is managed by Christophe Gribelin, with winemaking overseen by Philippe Lespy, formerly of Domaines Barons de Rothschild. It is widely regarded as producing the most refined wines in Morocco.
