Description

The entry point to Pian dell'Orino's world-class Brunello programme, a Rosso di Montalcino treated with the same meticulous care as their flagship wine and aged 28 months in large oak barrels, something no other producer does at this level.

Tasting Notes

Bright ruby red with garnet notes. The nose is elegant and precise with aromas of red cherry, wild strawberry, violet, and a gentle earthy, mineral complexity. On the palate it is medium to full bodied with refined tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, clean finish. More complex and serious than most Brunellos, and arguably better quality than many bottles at double the price.

Quick Facts

  • Grape: 100% Sangiovese Grosso
  • Origin: Italy, Tuscany, Rosso di Montalcino DOC
  • Style: Dry red, biodynamic certified since 2003, aged 28 months in large oak barrels
  • Winemaking: Manual harvest, spontaneous fermentation, no chemical additives

Food Pairing

Outstanding with grilled Tuscan meats, wild boar, pasta with meat ragu, and aged Pecorino. Versatile enough for any serious dinner table.

Serving

Serve at 18°C. Decant for 30 to 45 minutes to let the wine fully open. Rewards patience in the glass.

About the Producer

Pian dell'Orino was founded in 1997 by Caroline Pobitzer from South Tyrol and Jan Hendrik Erbach from Germany, who took over a small estate next door to the legendary Biondi-Santi tenuta in Montalcino. Working just 5.8 hectares of biodynamically farmed vines, certified since 2003, they produce some of the most celebrated and critically acclaimed Brunello in the appellation. Their 2016 Bassolino di Sopra received a 100-point score from Wine Advocate. Despite arriving in Montalcino as outsiders, they have risen to the very top of the quality pyramid through meticulous farming, native fermentation, and an unwavering commitment to expressing the unique complexity of their terroir.
